ABOUT

  • The shrine was completed and dedicated to the Emperor Meiji and the Empress Shoken in 1920, eight years after the passing of the emperor and six years after the passing of the empress. The shrine was destroyed during the war but was rebuilt shortly thereafter.

  • Emperor Meiji was the first emperor of modern Japan. He was born in 1852 and ascended to the throne in 1867 at the peak of the Meiji Restoration when Japan's feudal era came to an end and the emperor was restored to power. During the Meiji Period, Japan modernized herself to join the world's major powers by the time Emperor Meiji passed away in 1912.

  • 💡 There is a "goshuin" reception office in front of the main shrine, where you can receive one for 500 yen. In the previous information, I understood that you could only write directly on the stamp book if you purchased a goshuin book, but on this day, I was able to write directly on the goshuin book that I had brought with me. Are there restrictions on direct writing depending on the day? He was a very kind writer, and on the other end he said, ``If you have a goshuin book, you can write on it.''

ABOUT

  • How To: It is customary for tourists to wait until 1 pm to avoid exacerbating the wait times for the workers on lunch break. All customer-facing staff were friendly and eager to help, but few spoke any English. Signage is an inconsistent mix of paraphrased English or none at all.  The options consist entirely of noodle-in-soup dishes like ramen for under €4. Water and green tea are available in self-service at no extra charge.  Here's a step-by-step guide: STEP 1) Register as a visitor using the self-service machines near any of the ground-level entrances. Any of the info desks can point them out once you mention 'cafeteria'. No ID required. STEP 2) Exchange the QR code produced by the machine for a visitor badge at the adjoining desk. The guards see the purpose of your visit from that QR code and direct you to the right elevator. STEP 3) Pass the barrier using your badge and crowd into any lift going to Level 32. STEP 4) Follow signs down the corridor to the cafeteria entrance. STEP 5) Review what's available from the TVs showing the day's menu. There are photos but minimal English. STEP 6) Use the payment terminal beside the screen to order and pay. Cash only. Matching the Google Lens translation from the TV with the English name on the payment terminal worked out. STEP 7) The payment terminal prints a ticket. The number on the ticket refers to the counter you visit to collect your order. STEP 8) Hand over the ticket to the staff at the right counter and they will serve you the meal (after a minimal delay as the noodles are cooked fresh) STEP 9) Pick any available seat - the ones along the windows are obviously gone first. STEP 10) Return your tray and cutlery to the signposted return areas.
